Reproduction cels pose an interesting problem to the internet cel community.
Because almost any cel scan heavily implies ownership of the matching
production cel, misunderstandings are bound to happen, especially when it comes to
reproduction cels. Not only that, others can easily take advantage of
the less informed by passing off a reproduction as an original, be it through down
right lying or just cleverly crafted yet truthful words. A machine
made laser copy can easily be mistaken for real, even though in person it is
obviously fake. This is already a problem with laser copy backgrounds.
The purpose of this page is to educate those who may no have known about some of
the reproductions running around out there. This way, people will know
when to watch out for a sour deal. While I am not a fan of
reproduction cels, especially the machine made ones, some have fallen into my hands
via various means. I am displaying most of the ones that are currently
in my possession. However, please note that I do not, by any means,
own all the repos out there. If anyone would like to donate images or
have me link to their repro page, please email me.
I am not putting up the collection of 12 Evangelion machine made repros, for I
don't own them. Like the similar Nadesico collection, these laser
copies included the background on the cel. Many other machine repros do
not. Also, Evangelion had 6 hand painted reproduction cels.
The Eva ones are quite common and I would hope most everyone would be
familiar with them. The Nausicaa and Yoroiden Samurai Troopers
reproductions are machine made. Also, the so-called "Chroma Cels" are
machine made as well. I have seen "Chroma Cels" for the Lodoss OVA,
Project A-ko, Battle Arena Toshinden, Slayers, Sailormoon, Ah! Megami-sama, Ranma,
and Bubblegum Crisis. They have run in editions of 750 to 5000.
Like the Eva and Nadesico machine copies, the background is printed
onto the same cel as the character.
Some of the newer computer enhanced series only have reproduction cels, as no
production hand painted cels were ever made. So far, I have heard of
these repros for Mamotte Shugogetten and Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne.
Often times, the studios put out handpainted reproduction cels. I have
heard of many for Sailormoon, including Star season OP repros, normal portrait
shots, and henshin cels. I'm far from a Sailormoon cel collecting
expert though, so I would suggest anyone interested to ask around.
Studio Pierrot has put out reproduction hanken mono and production cel
art. Some of the series include Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Fushigi Yuugi and Kimagure Orange Road.
Also, Ghibli has been releasing limited edition cel art for their
movies (with backgrounds!). So far Totoro, Kiki, and Mononoke limited
editions have been released. However, these cels are not hand-painted
but silk screened. Many promotional reproduction cels were done for
Tatsunoko works, including Gatchaman. There were also many Ah!
Megami-sama (Oh My Goddess!) reproductions done that are virtually
indistinguishable from the originals (i.e. get your LDs out... and then
maybe you have a chance).
Of course, there are many reproductions of the 'hanken mono' (copyrighted things)
non-production art or original limited editions cels. Studio Pierrot has
many very limited edition pieces for their TV series. Caution,
they are not cheap. Also, there were a couple made for the Taiho
Shichauzo (You're Under Arrest!) movie. I have seen many "pin-up" cels,
but these may not be liscensed; they may be done by reproductionists looking to make
a little money.
I'm sure there are many others that I either don't know about. As
always, in cel collecting, be cautious and ask around if something doesn't seem
right.
